Title: Tranquility
Depicts my exhaustion combining my Vietnamese, Japanese and American identity, as well as my hope for future peace within it.
About the Artist
My name is Kari Yatsushiro, and I make art because I love being creative and paying attention to details. The question my investigation explores is “How does exhaustion affect me and those around me, and how does one recover from it?” Through contrasting exhaustion (whether from physical limitations, busy life, or identity) with the state of rest, I am able to bring visual awareness to both a deep exhaustion many face but don’t talk about, and the importance of rest as a tool for healing. Through portraiture with embedded natural elements representing either rest or exhaustion, I hope to bring awareness to both, creating an avenue to recovery and understanding for myself and others. In the future I hope to use the fine art skills I have developed and apply them to innovations in the STEM field, studying mechanical engineering next year at Cal Poly SLO.
