Title: To thrive
Piece shows a mother’s exhaustion from supporting and sacrificing for her child, as well as the best state of rest and healing for both mother and child to return to.
About the Artist

My name is Kari Yatsushiro and I make art because I love being creative and paying attention to details. The question my investigation explores is “How does exhaustion affect me and those around me, and how does one recover from it?” Through contrasting exhaustion (whether from physical limitations, busy life, or identity) with the state of rest, I am able to bring visual awareness to both a deep exhaustion many face but don’t talk about, and the importance of rest as a tool for healing. Through portraiture with embedded natural elements representing either rest or exhaustion, I hope to bring awareness to both, creating an avenue to recovery and understanding for myself and others. I hope to continue using my fine art skills by applying them to the STEM field, studying mechanical engineering at Cal Poly SLO.
