Oregon Churches

St. Peter, Portland

St. Peter in Portland, Oregon features architecture designed by John Zeller in 1938. The church showcases significant liturgical transformations reflecting the Catholic Church’s evolution.

The original sanctuary included traditional altar rails, a tabernacle positioned behind the altar, and classical liturgical arrangements typical of mid-20th century Catholic worship spaces.

A 1973 renovation introduced modernized liturgical elements, including work by liturgical consultant John Brouillard. The 1977 renovation further transformed the space, with Fr. John Domin designing liturgical banners and overseeing artistic updates.

The renovated sanctuary features a wooden altar, a prominent red crucifix, and custom liturgical artwork. The space includes Stations of the Cross, baptismal fonts enhanced with metal sculpture, and holy water fonts with decorative metal crosses. Architectural glass elements appear throughout, particularly in the baptistry area. The church demonstrates the evolving relationship between traditional Catholic liturgy and modern sacred art, with each renovation phase adding distinct spiritual and artistic character to the worship environment.
