St. Monica Church in Coos Bay underwent significant renovation in 1973, with Fr. John Domin serving as the liturgical consultant for the project. The renovation reflected post-Vatican II design principles and emphasized the integration of sacred art with liturgical space.
The church interior showcases several notable artistic elements created during the 1973 renovation. The sanctuary features a red crucifix alongside banners designed by Sara Montoya, including a sanctuary banner and butterfly motif. Additional liturgical art includes a Mystical Rose banner created by Greta Bodaneur.
The space includes a baptismal font and Paschal candle positioned near the Mystical Rose banner. A separate reconciliation room displays a crucifix and features calligraphy work by Fr. Domin bearing the text “The Lord is God; He has given us His light.”
The tabernacle area incorporates sculptural elements and multiple crucifixes, creating a focal point for worship and contemplation. The 1973 renovation represents a thoughtful approach to post-Vatican II Catholic church design, emphasizing accessible liturgical spaces while maintaining traditional Christian symbolism and sacred artistry throughout the interior.
