St. Mary Magdalene, Portland

St. Mary Magdalene is a large brick Catholic church in Portland, Oregon. The structure underwent significant renovation in 1984 under the direction of architect J. David Richen.

The renovation transformed the church’s interior to reflect post-Vatican II liturgical changes. A new altar and ambo were constructed from the dismantled marble altar rails, with the altar crafted from marble with wood components. A presider’s chair was created from the communion rail.

The Stations of the Cross were relocated from their original elevated position to eye level, making them more accessible to worshippers. The marble baptismal font was repositioned to the church entrance. The Blessed Sacrament tabernacle was moved to a new marble stand with wood top. A wooden statue of Madonna and Child was installed in the narthex.

These changes modernized the worship space while maintaining the church’s sacred character and artistic elements.
