St. Henry, Gresham

St. Henry Catholic Church in Gresham showcases Post-Vatican II design principles. The structure was originally designed by Richard Norman in 1966, featuring modernist elements characteristic of the period following the Second Vatican Council’s liturgical reforms.

The original sanctuary contained a suspended bronze crucifix with red enamel by artist Lee Kelly, positioned above the main altar. The church incorporated stained glass windows throughout, including clerestory windows positioned above the Stations of the Cross. Sacred artwork enhanced the interior, including inlaid wood icons created by Lolita Celsi depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph the Worker.

Architect Dave Richen led a significant 1991 renovation that reflected evolving liturgical practices. The altar was repositioned forward from its original placement against the wall, bringing it closer to the congregation. A Daily Mass Chapel with circular seating was added behind a dividing wall, featuring its own stained glass windows and crucifix. The renovation included a baptismal font positioned in the narthex, with the tabernacle relocated to the side of the sanctuary.
