St. Clare Church in Portland, Oregon is designed in the shape of a cross. The site documents both its pre- and post-Vatican II configurations.
Pre-Vatican II Interior
The original sanctuary featured a baldachino, communion rail, and tabernacle behind the altar — reflecting traditional Catholic liturgical design with emphasis on the elevated altar as the focal point.
Post-Vatican II Renovation (1984–85)
Architect David Richen redesigned the interior. The renovation moved the altar forward, relocated the Book and tabernacle to the right, and removed the communion rails — reflecting changing liturgical practices emphasizing congregational participation.
