Mount Angel Abbey Crypt

The crypt at Mount Angel Abbey, located in St. Benedict, Oregon, houses significant religious artwork created by renowned artists. The space is formally known as St. Joseph Crypt at Mount Angel Abbey.

The space contains a distinctive collection of mosaic Stations of the Cross created by Louisa Jenkins in 1951. These pieces feature a consistent design of twenty-four-inch-square mosaics framed in black steel.

The crypt serves as a sacred space dedicated to Jesus Christ, liturgy, and Christian art. The mosaics represent an important intersection of religious devotion and artistic expression within the monastic community. The work was undertaken with guidance from Fr. John Domin, who served as a liturgical consultant and played a significant role in shaping the artistic vision and theological direction of sacred spaces during this period.
