St. Francis Catholic Church in Riehen, near Basel, was designed by architect Fritz Metzger (1898–1973). The structure features a distinctive clock and bell tower positioned prominently in front of the building, rising substantially above the church itself. A baptistry is located to the right of the main entrance, and the building incorporates carved wooden entrance doors representing modern design principles using contemporary materials.
The church departs from traditional cruciform architectural patterns. The floor plan places a notably large baptismal area in alignment with the altar, which has been positioned forward within the sanctuary space. The baptismal area contains elaborate frescoes and carved statues on its walls. A baptismal font is accompanied by decorative candlework and a circular stained glass window featuring Trinitarian imagery.
A raised carved stone altar serves as the location for Eucharistic celebrations, decorated with an ornamental tabernacle and crucifix. The church also houses a Black Madonna and Christ Child figure positioned on a secondary side altar. The church represents an innovative approach to Catholic sacred space design, blending traditional religious elements with modernist architectural sensibilities.
