St. Ansgar Catholic Church, Berlin, Germany

St. Ansgar Catholic Church stands as a modernist architectural achievement in Berlin. The original structure was destroyed during Allied bombing in 1943, and the church was subsequently redesigned by William Kreuer, a master of postwar modernism.

The rebuilt church showcases striking contemporary design elements. A prominent bell tower and expansive floor-to-ceiling glass windows define the structure’s aesthetic. These soaring windows flood the interior with natural light, creating a bright and open worship space.

The generous glazing extends throughout the sanctuary, providing ample illumination to all areas of the church. The Stations of the Cross benefit particularly from this abundance of natural light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing visitors to view these devotional artworks with exceptional clarity. Kreuer’s modernist approach transformed St. Ansgar into a contemporary sacred space that breaks from traditional church architecture while maintaining its spiritual purpose.
