Franciscan Church, Cologne, Germany

Emil Steffann (1899–1968) designed the Franciscan Church in Cologne, which was constructed prior to Vatican II. The structure features a bell tower and renovated church following damage from World War II.

The church’s layout reflects post-war liturgical design principles. An elevated altar is free standing and is surrounded on three sides by the worshipping community, fostering direct engagement between clergy and congregation.

The interior incorporates both modern and original elements. Hanging lights were added during the renovation; the stained glass windows were part of the church that remained after the bombing of World War II. This combination of restored and newly installed elements creates a bridge between the church’s pre- and post-conflict history. The church represents an important example of mid-twentieth century Catholic sacred architecture in Germany, demonstrating how post-war reconstruction could honor liturgical innovation while preserving meaningful historical artifacts.
